The distillation range refers to the percentage of a petroleum product that is distilled off within a specified temperature range, reflecting its compositional characteristics and volatility. For example, the distillation range of gasoline determines a vehicle’s starting and acceleration performance, while that of diesel fuel influences engine combustion efficiency and emission levels. Distillation range determination is typically carried out using a distillation apparatus: a 100 mL oil sample is distilled under precisely controlled heating conditions, with the initial boiling point, final boiling point, and the temperatures corresponding to each fraction collected being recorded. Fully automated distillation range analyzers employ grating‑based detection to measure the volume of distillate and use temperature sensors to acquire temperature data in real time, automatically generating a distillation curve.
